‘Divine’ Sushmita Sen is blessed by snake

Frightening incidents often take place, especially when shooting at different locations. But one incident that could have been scary for some, turned out to be a blessing for our divine Sushmita Sen.

On one of the locations where the shooting of ‘Zindaggi Rocks’ was going on, a sudden and large commotion took place. When Tanuja Chandra, perturbed by the chaos asked what was going on, she was told that a large snake had been sighted at the location!

Many members of the unit immediately gathered near the place where the snake quietly sat with its face leaning upwards in a very regal manner, oblivious to all the hungama happening around it!

And guess who was the most interested in this holy creature, none other then Sushmita! Being an immense believer in the divinity of the Snake god, she seized this chance to adhere to her belief and she went very close to it and folded her hands in front of it and bent her head in prayer. A truly inspirational sight was this lovely lady in prayer and crew members were just transfixed as she finished her devotion. She was said to have felt truly blessed that day, and we have a slight feeling the snake felt that too! After all not every snake gets the devotion of such a beautiful woman like Sushmita Sen everyday!

Gangster bana doctor

Zindaggi Rocks’, B.A.G Film Ltd’s first Bollywood venture will see Sushmita and Shiney portraying the characters of a singer and doctor respectively. Sushmita needs no introduction but one actor who has definitely taken the industry by surprise is Shiney Ahuja. His stupendous performance in ‘Gangster’ which incidentally was his first commercial foray received applaud galore. Not keeping his fans waiting he will soon be seen in yet another powerful performance in Anurradha Prasad’s Zindaggi Rocks’ Produced under the banner of B.A.G Films Ltd. Tanuja Chandra directs the film. Shiney plays a reclusive, shy, mostly cynical, workaholic Doctor who falls in love with a loud, friendly, a musical genius Sushmita Sen.

“It’s a pure coincidence that the two films are releasing within a gap of four months,” says Shiney. “What attracted me to the film was the script, working with Tanuja Chandra and B.A.G Films Ltd”.

The other starcast in the film include Moushimi Chatterjee (in a double role), Kim Sharma, Seema Biswas and Ravi Gosain. A love story set in urban times showcases the life of two lovers.

Expressing her views, producer Anurradha Prasad says, “Shiney has a strong personality and is surely here to make a mark in Bollywood. His performance in Zindaggi Rocks’ will surely establish him as an actor who is here to stay and grow in this competitive industry”.

Expressing her views on the film, director Tanuja Chandra says, “Shiney have done a great job on screen. His sensitive portrayal of the character, Dr Suraj Rihan is very different from the roles he has done so far.”

ZINDAGGI ROCKS’ has music by Anu Malik and FOUR breathtaking songs sung by Sunidhi Chauhan.

Best antivirus software for 2008

You’re crazy to use a computer on the web without antivirus software, but getting solid antivirus protection doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune. In fact, some of the most capable antivirus products don’t cost a thing. Here are some of my personal thoughts on the best antivirus products on the market, both free and commercial.

Free

Alwil Avast! 4.6 Home Edition - Venerable Avast! is still free for personal use, and it’s a relatively unobtrusive and capable virus stomper that will work well for just about anyone. A new feature adds a web proxy to the mix (which filters all traffic running through it for security risks), and it works will all major web browsers. It also recognizes non-virus threats like spyware and adware. The Pro edition ($40) adds a few power-user features that the average user probably won’t miss. Give the free version a try!

Aviva AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 7 - This has long been a capable and effective antivirus product, especially noteworthy for its fast operation.

UPDATE: Many readers have asked me about Grisoft’s AVG product. I’ve used it and don’t really prefer it to Avast/Aviva, namely because it does not seem to scan all files effectively. Independent security ratings place it relatively low in overall capability as well. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Paid

Trend Micro Internet Security Pro - Trend Micro has long been an also-ran in the antivirus world, but after spending some time with a recent version of the software I’ve been impressed with how well it works, its paucity of crashes, and how generally effective it is. Trend offers three vaguely similar versions of its security application; this one ($70) is the most inclusive, and cheaper than the rest. You can also get plain antivirus for just $40.

Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 - If you want absolute and utter control over every 1 and 0 that enters and exits your computer, Kaspersky is the app for you. I honestly don’t think you can get any more secure than with Kaspersky locking down your system, but it was overkill even for me, and I had trouble convincing it not to remove some applications I knew were OK and actually wanted on my PC. Kaspersky is a hungry shredder with no reverse button (and it’s on the slow side, too). $80. (Anti-virus only is $60.) I put NOD32 in this category; it’s very similar in operation but can be heavy-handed.

Symantec Norton 360 - I’ve been a Norton user in various forms for close to a decade; the latest version doesn’t do much different than the last few years’ worth, but it’s still rock-solid security that I don’t hesitate to rely on. My only complaint is that Norton can slow down your computer quite a bit (like Kaspersky) and almost invariably hangs when I’m trying to shut down my computer. If you’ve ever wondered where all those error messages about programs like “ccApp” not responding come from, well, you’ve found it. It’s frustrating that these problems persist year after year. $80 for Norton 360, or AntiVirus only for $60.

The worst computer viruses of all time

If you haven’t experienced a computer virus yet, just wait — you probably will.Fortunately, you missed the real heyday of computer viruses when anti-virus software wasn’t very widely used, and virus attacks caused millions of dollars in damages overnight. Today’s viruses can still be nightmarish, but for the average user, cleanup is considerably easier than it was just a few years ago, when the only solution in many cases was reformatting your hard drive and starting from scratch (and even that didn’t do the trick sometimes).

So join me on a trip down memory lane as we revisit some of the worst viruses of all time and count our blessings that our computers are still up and running despite it all. (Though, please note, “worst” is a matter of considerable debate in the security industry, as the number of infected machines and amount of financial loss is always estimated. If you think another virus was worse than these, please post it in the comments to remind us!)

The worst viruses of all time

Brain, 1986
It all started here: Brain was the first “real” virus ever discovered, back in 1986. Brain didn’t really hurt your PC, but it launched the malware industry with a bang and gave bad ideas to over 100,000 virus creators for the next 2 decades.

Michelangelo, 1991
The worst MS-DOS virus ever, Michelangelo attacked the boot sector of your hard drive and any floppy drive inserted into the computer, which caused the virus to spread rapidly. After spreading quietly for months, the virus “activated” on March 6, and promptly started destroying data on tens of thousands of computers.

Melissa, 1999
Technically a worm, Melissa (named after a stripper) collapsed entire email systems by causing computers to send mountains of messages to each other. The author of the virus was eventually caught and sentenced to 20 months in prison.

ILOVEYOU, 2000
This was notable for being one of the first viruses to trick users into opening a file, which in this case claimed to be a love letter sent to the recipient. In reality, the file was a VBS script that sent mountains of junk mail and deleted thousands of files. The results were terribly devastating- one estimate holds that 10 percent of all computers were affected, to a cost of $5.5 billion. It remains perhaps the worst worm of all time.

Code Red, 2001
An early “blended threat” attack, Code Red targeted Web servers instead of user machines, defacing websites and later launching denial-of-service attacks on a host of IP addresses, including those of the White House.

Nimda, 2001
Built on Code Red’s attack system of finding multiple avenues into machines (email, websites, network connections, and others), Nimda infected both Web servers and user machines. It found paths into computers so effectively that, 22 minutes after it was released, it became the Internet’s most widespread virus at the time.

Klez, 2001
An email virus, Klez pioneered spoofing the “From” field in email messages it sent, making it impossible to tell if Bill Gates did or did not really send you that information about getting free money.

Slammer, 2003
Another fast spreader, this worm infected about 75,000 systems in just 10 minutes, slowing the Internet to a crawl (much like Code Red) and shutting down thousands of websites.

MyDoom, 2004
Notable as the fastest-spreading email virus of all time, MyDoom infected computers so they would, in turn, send even more junk mail. In a strange twist, MyDoom was also used to attack the website of SCO Group, a very unpopular company that was suing other companies over its code being used in Linux distributions.

Storm, 2007
The worst recent virus, Storm spread via email spam with a fake attachment and ultimately infected up to 10 million computers, causing them to join its zombie botnet.

Thanks to Symantec for helping to compile this list.

The Obedient Wife

There was a man who had worked all his life, had saved all of his money, and was a real “miser” when it came to his money.
Just before he died, he said to his wife…”When I die, I want you to take all my money and put it in the casket with me. I want to take my money to the afterlife with me.”
And so he got his wife to promise him, with all of her heart, that when he died, she would put all of the money into the casket with him.
Well, he died. He was stretched out in the casket, his wife was sitting there - dressed in black, and her friend was sitting next to her. When they finished the ceremony, and just before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said, “Wait just a moment!”
She had a small metal box with her; she came over with the box and put it in the casket. Then the undertakers locked the casket down and they rolled it away.
So her friend said, “Girl, I know you were not fool enough to put all that money in there with your husband.”
The loyal wife replied, “Listen, I’m a Christian; I cannot go back on my word. I promised him that I was going to put that money into the casket with him.” You mean to tell me you put that money in the casket with him!?!?!?”
“I sure did,” said the wife. “I got it all together, put it into my account, and wrote him a check…. If he can cash it, then he can spend it.”

Three gangsters, a thrilling chase

Pune, March 25 Three gangsters possessing sophisticated foreign made pistols were nabbed by the crime branch of city police after a thrilling daylight gunbattle near Clover Islands on NIBM Road around 12.30 pm on Tuesday. The incident has once highlighted the growing Mumbai-type underworld activities in Pune. Primary investigations revealed that gangsters had planned to threaten a prominent builder for extorting a ransom of about Rs 10 crore. The police refused to give the details of the builder. Sources said the gangsters had targeted a Thane-based builder who is also working on construction project in Kondhwa area.

The accused were identified as Asif Yusuf Khan (29) of Lonavla, Ravindra Macchindra Helfare (40) of Nagpur chawl in Yerwada and Kiran Nandakumar Salvi (25) of Shanti Rakshak Society, Yerawada. “Two foreign-made pistols, worth Rs 1.5 lakh each, loaded with 10 cartridges, were seized form the trio,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) Anil Kumbhare.

Acting on a tip off, a team of Anti Extortion Cell comprising Inspector Bhanupratap Barge, assistant inspector Raghunath Phuge, constables Mahadev Dimble, Kashinath Ubhe, Bapu Tamboli, Anil Shinde, Baba Shirke, Sachin Dhavale, Pravin Kasalkar, Susheel Dhivar, Kunal Shinde, Sandeep Patil and Appa Gaikwad laid a trap on NIBM Road.

The team chased the men who were spotted moving suspiciously on two motorbikes on NIBM Road. Realising the danger, the gangsters fired two bullets at the police team. Inspector Barge fired two bullets at them, one of which went on to hit the rear tyre of their motorbike. The motorbike skidded and two men were caught. The third man was held minutes later. During interrogations, the trio confessed that Sadiq Bengali of Lonavla, reported to be a close associate of a Mumbai underworld leader, had provided the two motorbikes and pistols to them for carrying out the operation.

Encounter specialist Rajbir Singh gunned down

New Delhi, March 25: Delhi Police’s encounter specialist Rajbir Singh, whose career had its share of both glory and controversy, was gunned down allegedly by a property dealer in Gurgaon on the outskirts of the national capital. 48-year-old Singh, who was ACP in Delhi Police’s Special Operations Squad and had been provided ‘Z’ category security cover, was shot twice in the head from point blank range last night allegedly by property dealer Vijay Bhardwaj.

The incident took place in Bhardwaj’s office near Sukhrali village in Gurgaon in Haryana at around 10:30 pm last night, Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said. It was not immediately clear whether the men guarding him were present when he was shot.

Gurgaon Police Commissioner Mohinder Lal told PTI that Bhardwaj has surrendered and “confessed” to the crime.

“The accused has surrendered and confessed to the crime.

It appears that the dispute was over the profit both of them got in a property deal,” Lal said.

“He also said that he was trying to arrange the money to give to Singh for a long time and he could not,” he said.

Talking to reporters, Bhardwaj claimed he owed some money to Singh and that the officer had “threatened” to kill him.

“I wanted to commit suicide, but my family found the (suicide) letter and stopped me. Today was payment day and I could not put the money together. He said he would kill me,” he claimed.

Lal said Bhardwaj had allegedly procured the revolver three days back from Singh and used the weapon to kill him.

Singh, who had joined Delhi Police as a Sub-Inspector in 1982, had 56 encounter killings to his name, including the infamous Ansal Plaza operation in 2002 in which two terrorists were killed. However, questions were raised over some of his operations by human rights groups.

A winner of five medals, including the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry, Singh was involved in the investigations into the Parliament and Red Fort attack cases.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police was transferred from the Crime Branch to Delhi Armed Police after allegations of his involvement in an illegal land deal last year. There were also allegations of his links with drug traffickers, land mafia and bookies following telephone tappings.

The vigilance probe, however, gave him a clean chit and he returned to head the Special Operations Squad in November last year.

Delhi Police said it would work closely with Gurgaon Police in the investigation into the killing.

A Delhi Police team which went to verify details about the incident identified his body which has been sent to the civic hospital in Gurgoan for post-mortem.

Singh is survived by wife, son (14) and daughter (11).

Ford sells Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata

London, March 25 US automaker Ford has agreed to sell its luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover to India’s Tata Motors for more than $2 billion, according to a source familiar with the matter. Ford, which signed the deal on Tuesday, plans to publicly announce the transaction in New York at 0800 EST on Wednesday, said another source.

The deal will also see Ford pay about 300 million pounds ($598 million) into Jaguar and Land Rovers’ pension funds, according to unions.

Ford declined to comment, adding “our first responsibility is to communicate with our employees.”

The sale had been expected at the start of this month, but it was delayed as the two firms discussed their future relationship, including technology sharing and Ford’s provision of engines and body parts for the two brands.

Tata, India’s top vehicle maker, has been in talks with Ford since it was chosen as the frontrunner to buy Jaguar and Land Rover a few days into 2008.

Tata is pursuing the deal to gain a substantial foothold outside India.

But analysts have questioned how Tata will incorporate the luxury brands into its stable of sturdy trucks and functional passenger cars, including the Nano, the world’s cheapest car which it unveiled in January.

While Land Rover has generated three years of record sales with its iconic SUVs, the fit of Jaguar is far less clear. Ford, which lost $2.7 billion in 2007 and $12.6 billion in 2006, is spinning off Jaguar and Land Rover to focus on turning around its loss-making operations in North America.

The sale will include a commitment by Tata to continue buying engines from Ford, according to unions.

All Jaguar and Land Rover’s petrol engines are built in a Ford plant in South Wales, supporting hundreds of jobs there. Diesel engines come from Ford’s factory in Dagenham, east London.

One of the sources knocked down reports on Indian television earlier on Tuesday that the deal had been closed for $2.65 billion.

“That figure of $2.65 billion is highly unlikely,” one source close to the deal said of the report on news channel NDTV Profit. “You have to come south from that by quite a bit.”

Ahead of the TV report, shares in Tata Motors rose 2.7 percent to a three-week closing high of 679.95 rupees, in a Mumbai market that surged 6.1 percent.

Kareena’s lover tattoo not permanent!

Grapevine has it that the Kareena tattoo Saif Ali Khan has on his left hand is not of the permanent type. Meaning it needs a fresh dye every five days or so and if the tattoo is not touched up regularly, it could very well fade away.

The couple -Saif and Kareena- could have found eternal happiness with misty memories when he turns 64 and she huh 57. The temporary tattoo talk, sure, come as a bad news for the couple’s well-wishers.

Katrina is unstoppable!

Katrina is unstoppable! According to a recent survey conducted by a leading mobile company, Katrina Kaif’s photographs are one of the most downloaded amongst female Bollywood actors.

In the race of downloading actresses’ photographs, Katrina Kaif has left Aishwarya and other actors far behind. And, guess who her male counterpart is? No, it’s not Salman, but Shah Rukh Khan. Do we see Sallu fuming?

Amrita Rao in love

Rumour has it that the girl has a boyfriend…at last! Amrita Rao, who always has mommy for company, seems to have grown up. The girl has lost her heart…or nearly lost it, to a guy called Farhan. And no, Ayesha Takia (whose boyfriend’s name is also Farhan) need not worry. We are talking about a certain Farhan Saeed who replaced Atif Aslam in the Pakistani band ‘Jal’. Apparently, Amrita was shooting for a music video for their new album, and in the process bonded with Farhan. Apparently, Farhan has been frequenting Mumbai and is not missing any opportunity to spend time with Amrita.
