Notice issued to Ram Gopal Varma for cheating

Noida, (IANS) The Noida Police have issued a notice to noted Bollywood filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma on a

complaint from Super Cassette Industries Pvt Ltd, the maker of T-Series brand of audio and video cassettes, alleging

that Varma had cheated the company of Rs.15 million.

The notice, posted by investigation officer Narendra Kumar Sharma, was sent on Saturday by registered post to Varma’s

Mumbai address. The filmmaker has been asked to be present before the officer within seven days of receipt of the

notice to give his version.

The criminal case was filed against the noted filmmaker at the Sector 20 police station of Noida by Neeraj Kalyan, an

official of Super Cassette Industries.

In his complaint, Kalyan stated that Varma June 13, 2006 inked an agreement with the company selling the rights of his

upcoming 14 films. The agreement was signed at the Film City Noida on a Rs.100 non-judicial stamp paper in which

Varma clearly stated that all rights, including marketing, publicity and realization of outstanding money and even

copyright of his new films have been given to Super Cassette Industries. He stated that the 14 films, including,

“Nishabd”, “Aag” and “Darwaja Bund Rakho”, would be the sole proprietorship of Super Cassette.

After the agreement, the company invested Rs.14 million on a film produced by Varma, which incurred heavy losses.

But in anticipation of recovering the loss in the other films, the company continued to invest in his new ventures. But

Varma, breaching the contract, signed up with another company to realise the outstanding cash of his new ventures from

the market. When Super Cassette came to know about his new assignment, Varma denied it and told the company that

he would abide by the old agreement, Super Cassette official said in his complaint.

The company then issued public notices in newspapers saying that it holds all the rights of Varma’s new films. But the

company learnt later that Varma had breached the contract and signed on ADLABS to realise all payments from the

market, including the copyrights of the films after terminating the old agreement with Super Cassette.

The complainant said by signing the new contract, Varma has cheated the company and requested legal action against

him. The Sector 20 police registered the complaint under various sections of the Indian Penal Code against Varma, a

resident of Link House, Bir Desai Road, Andheri Road, Mumbai, and some others.

Varma could not be reached for comments despite several attempts to reach him on his mobile phone.

names. In addition to that, Diamonds worth ten crores are stolen from a certain Don, Papa. The diamonds accidentally

fall in the hands of young lovebirds - Chandu (Upen Patel) and Chandni (Tanisha), who quickly hide them in a car. Papa

and his idiotic henchmen Albert (Vrijesh Hirjee) and Pinto (Manoj Pahva) are desperately hunting for the diamonds

while hot headed police officer Mayavati Chautala (Neetu Chandra) is on the prowl looking for offenders of any kind.

The first Laxmi Narayan (Tusshar Kapoor). He’s from a ‘khandani’ mafia family and his mother prays that with a few

India asks Dalai Lama not to hurt ties with China

NEW DELHI - India has urged the Dalai Lama not to indulge in political activities that hurt its ties with China, in remarks that analysts said were an attempt to placate Beijing and show it was acting against Tibetan protesters.

“He is a respected guest in India,” Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said, in comments aired by television channels on Tuesday.

“India will continue to offer him all hospitality, but during his stay in India, they should not do any political activity, any action that can adversely affect relations between India and China.”

The north Indian hill town of Dharamsala, home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan “government-in-exile”, has been the epicentre of protests against China’s crackdown in Tibet.

Tibetan protesters also stormed the Chinese embassy in New Delhi last month, prompting Beijing to summon the Indian ambassador and express its displeasure.

The protests have come as an embarrassment for India, at a time when it is trying to build closer ties with China and repair decades of mistrust and even hostility dating back to a 1962 border war.

Analysts said the message was less for the Dalai Lama and more for China.

“Its a strong message that goes out to Beijing that we are doing your bidding,” Bharat Karnad, an international affairs expert, told Reuters.

India has tried to reassure Bejing that security will be tight for the Olympics torch during its Indian leg relay.

But the country’s football captain, Bhaichung Bhutia, a Buddhist, has refused to carry the Olympic torch in protest against China’s actions to quell unrest in Tibet, an official said on Tuesday.

Internationally acclaimed Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur

Internationally acclaimed Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur is all set to direct a

$200-million Hollywood fantasy-epic for Warner Brothers titled “Larklight”.

“I was in LA last week to collaborate with writer Steve Knight for ‘Larklight’. It’s something I had signed on three

months ago. It’s a franchise book and being hailed as the new ‘Harry Potter’. Warner Brothers has bought the rights.

Steve and I are currently working on the screenplay,” an excited Kapur, who made the acclaimed Hollywood film

“Elizabeth”, told IANS.

“Steve and I are good friends. We’ve been working on the script extensively. It’s a &200-million project, probably the

most expensive film I’ve made and will ever make,” he said.

“Larklight” is the current craze on the bookshelves and its author, Philip Reeve, is being touted as another J.K. Rowling.

It was an instant bestseller across the world when released in 2006.

What comes as a surprise is that Kapur has been chosen to direct the screen version.

However, Kapur is no stranger to science-fantasies. Remember the aborted “Time Machine” with Aamir Khan, which he

is now going to produce for director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra?

A young, bright and serious boy plays the lead. Let’s not forget Kapur discovered Jugal Hansraj for his Bollywood film

“Masoom”.

Interestingly, Knight conceived and wrote the popular game show “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”, which later

became our “Kaun Banega Crorepati”. His last screenplay was “Eastern Promises”.

Kapur will first complete “Larklight” in Hollywood before proceeding to do the much-talked about “Paani” in Mumbai.

Romancing younger men on screen seems to be in vogue in Bollywood

The latest to join the bandwagon is Bipasha Basu who pairs up with Ranbir Kapoor and Neil Nitin Mukesh in two of her forthcoming

films.

While Ranbir is Bipasha’s co-star in Siddharth Anand’s “Bachna Ae Haseenon”, the actress teams up with Neil in new

director Jehangir Surti’s “Freeze”.

Bipasha plays a slightly older co-star to both the coveted debutants of 2007 in the films.

In “Freeze”, Bipasha is cast as a deejay to Neil’s role of a high-flying photographer.

The 29-year-old is at the moment reluctant to talk about her role. “We’re in discussion. I like the script. It’s too soon to

talk about it,” Bipasha told IANS.

Neil, who is three years younger, is also cautious, but far more forthright. He said: “Yes, Bipasha is opposite me in

‘Freeze’. And I’m really excited. She’s someone I’ve always admired.”

Mention the age difference and Neil gets immediately embarrassed.

“Nobody will notice that she came to the industry before me. Our characters justify our presence. She does play

someone older.

“Is she really older to Ranbir in the Yash Raj film? Just a coincidence, I guess. In our film together I play this guy who

starts off as down-and-out and then goes to become this really big name in his field.”

Neil says he likes playing characters with a graph.

“‘Johnny Gaddar’ had that graph. I went from greed to atonement. My second film ‘Tera Kya Hoga Johnny’ with Sudhir

bhai (Mishra) is again a character with shades. I start ‘Freeze’ in April.”

Bipasha was reluctant to do another film where her co-star was younger, but her boyfriend John Abraham convinced

her.

“That’s true,” said Neil. “Bipasha did have her doubts when she read the script. But then John Abraham who happens to

be a pal of the ‘Freeze’ director happened to go through the script. He convinced her to go for it. John is a really cool

guy. And Bipasha, she’s hot! I hope John doesn’t mind my saying so.”

A few years ago, Dimple Kapadia dared to team up with Akshaye Khanna in “Dil Chahta Hai”, Saif Ali Khan in “Being

Cyrus” and Amol Mhatre in “Leela”.

Earlier, Deepa Sahi teamed up with Shah Rukh Khan in “Maya Memsaab”, Rakhee Gulzar with Rishi Kapoor in

“Doosra Aadmi”, not to forget Nutan with Amitabh Bachchan in “Saudagar”.

She is one of the most talented actresses in Bollywood

She is one of the most talented actresses in Bollywood, but Kajol, who graces the

screen after a gap of two years in her home production “U, Me Aur Hum”, says her priority is her family.

“I am not going to do four films a year. I will work, but at my own speed,” Kajol told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

After marriage with Ajay Devgan in 1999, the actress cut down her film roles and was occasionally seen in hits like

“Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” and “Fanaa”.

For “U, Me Aur Hum”, she teams up with hubby. The film, which releases April 11, marks Ajay’s directorial debut and

he has written the script too.

Asked how different this film is from her other movies, the ebullient actress says: “Well, I hope it is not so different that

it becomes a bad film (laughs). I won’t say it is different, but it is a very special film for me.”

“While working in the film I never felt constrained. In fact, it was the other way round. I felt very comfortable and at

home.”

Her debut film, “Bekhudi”, in 1992 did fairly well, but it was “Baazigar” with Shah Rukh Khan a year later that was her

first blockbuster. She later went on to deliver some of the biggest Bollywood hits like “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge”,

“Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” opposite Shah Rukh.

Juggling multiple roles of a wife, mother, actress and judge of a TV show, Kajol is neck deep in work. “Time

management is a huge issue. I’m doing it with difficulty. Even a 15-minute delay makes a lot of difference. But I think it

is not impossible to manage all this, you can do it.”

Commenting on the changes in the film industry in the last one decade, Kajol says this evolution is vital.

“It is very important that things should change. We should change. You will die if you don’t change. In the last few years

viewers have changed, their demands have changed, the business of cinema has changed, and with so many changes the

parameters of Indian cinema has changed.”

On rumours that she has signed Karan Johar’s next venture, Kajol said: “I have not signed the film, but I am discussing

it with him. When I sign, I will certainly let everybody know about it.”

She is having a ball as judge on Zee TV’s new reality show “Rock n Roll” along with her husband and mother, actress

Tanuja. “I’m really enjoying the reality show. There is so much positive energy,” she said.

She has a high opinion of her fans. “I think we underestimate our fans. They are so level-headed and know where to

draw the line. Only a very small percentage of fans go overboard.”

Kay Kay Menon

He ventured into films after doing an MBA and stints in theatre and TV. But talented

actor Kay Kay Menon has carved a niche for himself by doing unconventional roles in movies like “Hazaaron

Khwaishein Aisi” and “Corporate”. However, he resists being called a star.

“There is a difference between a star and an actor. Anyone leading a flamboyant life can be a star, for instance

(entrepreneur) Vijay Mallya. But he is not an actor,” Kay Kay told IANS here.

“I have chosen to be an actor and don’t believe in making my stepping-out-of-the-house an event. I am a very simple

person,” he added.

Kay Kay, an MBA, first worked in theatre and then gradually moved to television. In 1995, he made his debut on the big

screen with “Naseem” , but he shot to fame with Sudhir Mishra’s critically acclaimed film “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi”.

Then there was no looking back and the actor earned rave reviews for his acting in “Black Friday”, “Sarkar”,

“Corporate”, “Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.”, and “Life…In A Metro”.

When asked about his dream role, he said: “There is no dream role that I want to play because I keep dreams and roles

separate.

“Either you work or you see dreams. So I see dreams and choose roles separately. A dream is called a dream because it

can never be fulfilled in real life and I cherish them. However, when I pick up projects I go for only those that I can do

justice to,” he explained.

As to why he does too many masala entertainers, he said: “Opting for films that cater to a niche audience is not a

deliberate effort. I only go for a role when there is something in it that excites me. It’s just like love… and can’t be

articulated.

“But it’s not true that I am only doing serious roles. I did comedy in ‘Honeymoon Travels…’ and would do the same in

‘Sankat City’ as well.”

Apart from “Sankat City”, he also has projects like “Shaurya”, “Drona”, “Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam”, “BBD” and

“Dream Man” in his kitty.

Commenting on whether with the advent of the multiplex culture in the country Indian cinema has become more

realistic, he said: “There is nothing like unreal and real cinema. Actually, there are only two types of movies - believable

and non-believable. A director can even successfully make a sci-fi believable.

“Although the sensibility of audience these days has definitely evolved more, it is a result of the exposure of audiences

to world cinema, which wasn’t there earlier.”

IDEA-IIFA Awards 2008 by casting the first vote

The brand ambassador of International

Indian Film Academy (IIFA), Amitabh Bachchan set in motion the

voting process for IDEA-IIFA Awards 2008 by casting the first vote

The industry voting for the IDEA-IIFA Awards nominations would be

IIFA voting weekend to decide nominations for the main awards.

This year the star-studded glamorous IIFA weekend is being held June

6-8 in Bangkok.

Speaking on the occasion, Bachchan said, “Casting my vote is

important as it gives me a chance to participate in the decision-making

process with my peers in the Indian film industry. It is heartening to see

IIFA grow in scale and prominence over the years.”

He said the fact that IIFA has entered its ninth year is a testament to its

endurance and importance in the industry.

“The credible and distinct place that IIFA enjoys in the Indian film

industry is due to the professional and confidential election process

that ultimately decides the nominations and awards.”

The IIFA weekend and the IDEA-IIFA Awards, spearheaded by

Wizcraft International Entertainment, is a movement dedicated to

promoting Indian cinema and business across the world and providing a

global pedestal to encourage international interaction.

Govinda is excited about getting together with director David Dhawan and producer Vashu Bhagnani again

“We’ve created quite a `dhamaal’ in the past with ‘Hero No 1′ and ‘Coolie No 1′. We’ll definitely be creating a full-on entertainment again. Yes, it’ll be a comedy. I’ll try my level-best that we come back with a film that will do justice to all three of us.”

Govinda says he owes his entire comeback to David Dhawan. “It’s something I learnt from Bachchan. When he needed to make a comeback he called Yash Chopra for `Mohabbatein’. Similarly when I needed to come back I rang up David and he gave me `Partner’.”

Govinda has no qualms admitting that the Big B influenced him. “Yeah, I copied Bachchan. I’m not anything like Bachchan. But why shouldn’t I copy a man as great as him? If he could reach out to a filmmaker, why couldn’t I? David is such a big man. One call to him and my career was re-made. Today, if he asks me to do another film with him I don’t even need to think about it. I’d do it blindly.”

Govinda has never been more charged up about his career. “I don’t really care what people say about me. All I know is, I’m doing my work with sincerity. And I’ve become very punctual. I reach my sets on time.

“I’m not here to create any problems for anyone. If I’m doing my work quietly, why are some people getting troubled by it? But I’m not going to get rattled.

“I don’t regret anything, not even my entry into politics. I respect politicians because they’re doing their jobs very efficiently. But the fame and fortune I’ve got has come through Mata Saraswati and my art (movies). No one has the right to eye my career and try to ruin it.”

Govinda’s “Money Hai To Honey Hai” producer Kumar Mangat adds: “A miracle happened during the shooting. We finished Govinda’s work in 60 days when we had reserved his dates for 85 days.

“In Mauritius where we shot most of the film, Govinda was the first of the cast to be awake. In fact he’d wake me up and we’d have our morning tea together. I remember we had to shoot at a discotheque in Mauritius. We had to reach at 8 a.m. and all we saw were the janitors at work. That’s how punctual Govinda has become.”

In fact Kumar Mangat is planning another film with Govinda this year. “He’s a pleasure to work with,” says the producer.

Director Karan Johar, who teams up with TV tycoon Ekta Kapoor in her next home production “C Kkompany”,

Director Karan Johar, who teams up with TV tycoon Ekta Kapoor in her next home production “C Kkompany”, says he cannot refuse any offer from her.

“Ekta is a sweetheart. I can never say no to her. I don’t want to divulge any details about the film. Ekta will tell you what I’ve to do,” Karan told IANS.

Added Ekta: “‘C Kkompany’ will have Karan and also Mahesh Bhatt making appearances. I’m also there. The awards committees are going to have a tough time next year.”

Ekta ventured into filmmaking with “Kucch To Hai” and “Krishna Cottage”. Last year she co-produced the box office hit “Shootout At Lokhandwala” with Sanjay Gupta.

This won’t be Karan’s first acting assignment. He started as a child actor in Anand Mahendroo’s Doordarshan serial “Indradhanush”, and then played Shah Rukh Khan’s nerdy friend in “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”. More recently he had a cameo in Sujoy Ghosh’s “Home Delivery” and a voice-on-telephone part in Nikhil Advani’s “Salaam-e-Ishq”.

However, Karan refutes recent reports that he is acting in Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Fashion”.

Karan, whose last film “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” was panned, has an extremely busy year ahead. Not only is he neck-deep researching for his next directorial venture titled “Khan”, he’s also heavily into chatting up celebrities thanks to his reputation of a glorious gabber from STAR TV’s “Koffee With Karan”.

Malaika Shaadi After Effects

Mumbai, March 30 (IANS) Model-turned actress Malaika Arora has just done her first film with her husband Arbaaz Khan, however they just have an item song together. She is very keen to do more feature films with him.

She told IANS: “It’s a marital comedy called ‘Shaadi Ke After Effects”. I’m not Arbaaz’s wife in the film. I play the temptress and I’ve an item song with him.

“It was great fun working with Arbaaz. Now I want to do a full-fledged film with him. I want to do a comedy with my husband. So far no aspect of talent has been tapped except my dancing.”

Now Malaika, who was seen in hit item numbers like “Chaiyya chaiyya” and “Kaal” songs, will be extremely cautious about the item songs.

“But if tomorrow a Farah Khan tells me to do a song with Shah Rukh Khan, of course I’ll do it. But it has to be something worth my while. It’s always been nothing but the best for me.”

She is married for 10 years and and says that the secret to their successful marriage is an angel who is protecting them.

“I don’t know how these ten years have passed. It’s been so unreal, such a dream.

“How do we manage to avoid all temptation? I guess there’s an angel watching over our marriage,” she added.

The couple’s top priority is their son Arhaan.

“Arbaaz and I make a conscious effort to share domestic responsibilities. When I’m out working he looks after our son. Without a doubt our baby is our top priority. And the work I do has to centre on his schedules,” said the actress who plays main lead in Suniel Shetty’s “EMI”.

Shilpa denies getting the boot from ‘Miss Bollywood’

Mumbai, (IANS) Shilpa Shetty has denied reports that she has been booted out from the second run of her successful West End musical, “Miss Bollywood”.

A report in Mumbai Mirror said that the show’s promoter Farhath Hussain, who organises Bollywood shows all over Britain, was in talks with Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta to get into Shilpa’s shoes for the second innings over price differences.

When contacted, Shilpa refused to comment on Hussain, but said: “The musical has been a wonderful experience. I’ve been there, seen it and done it. I would love to do it again, but when I have the time and dates.”

Her publicist Dale Bhagwagar termed the talk about another actress stepping into Shilpa’s shoes as mere speculation. “Shilpa is to ‘Miss Bollywood’ what Angelina Jolie is to Lara Croft. Moreover, licence holders of the musical are Harris International in Dubai and so there is no question of anyone else booting her out,” he said.

“There are no immediate plans for a second run only because Shilpa is going to be busy with announced and unannounced films, endorsements and other assignments chalked out till mid-2009,” he added.

M.S. Ajmal of Harris International said: “After our run in Germany, Britain and Holland, offers are constantly pouring in from Australia and the US for putting up shows of the musical.

“Ever since ‘Big Brother’ and Richard Gere happened to her, Shilpa is in great demand in all these countries and is looked upon as the face of contemporary Bollywood. But we haven’t zeroed in on plans for a second innings yet.”

Bhagwagar also denied that Shilpa escalated her price after “Miss Bollywood” became a roaring success, putting Hussain in a quandary.

“Shilpa is an extremely professional person and not the kind to trouble anyone. She’s a rich girl and doesn’t run after money. She’s been lucky to get what she deserves,” Bhagwagar said.

“In the last few months, while we witnessed a metamorphosis in Brand Shilpa from an actress to diva, she has been offered astronomical amounts for certain film projects in Bollywood too. But she is choosing only those which will give her complete creative satisfaction,” he added.

Esha delighted by Tamil lingo in ‘One Two Three’

Mumbai, (IANS) Esha Deol’s character of a loud, crass and talkative Tamilian café owner in producer Kumar Mangat’s comedy “One Two Three” was never meant to be region-specific initially.

Ahswini Dheer, the talented sitcom director of “Office Office”, has helmed the film and was so impressed with her Tamil lingo that he gave her character a makeover.

“When Ashwini heard me chattering away in Tamil with my mother, who had come to visit me in Pondicherry, he loved the intonations and loud-and-soft dips and curves in our language,” said Esha, who earned rave reviews for her performance in “Ankahee”.

She is delighted by her side-splitting lingo opportunity.

“The Tamil in ‘One Two Three’ was a cakewalk. They loved my ‘aiyyos’ and ‘appas’ so much that they’ve decided to use them as a voiceover in the promos,” Esha told IANS.

After having shot her first comedy in Pondicherry, she is still laughing all the way to the brink.

“It’s my first attempt at comedy. Though I’ve been a part of comedy films like ‘No Entry’, I’ve never done the funny stuff. It was great fun going over the top, specially the portions where I had to speak my mother tongue.”

Esha has spoken Tamil on screen earlier.

“That’s right. In the Tamil version of Mani Ratnam’s ‘Yuva’, but that was a different style of Tamil spoken by the Iyer community - different from what we speak at home which is the Iyenger Tamil. So that was tough.”

With no more projects in hand, Esha is currently enjoying an ideal holiday.

“I’ve no assignments on hand after ‘One Two Three’ and I’m happy to wait for the right offers.”

Shah Rukh Khan ready to rock with ‘Kolkata Knight Riders’

Kolkata, (IANS) Blending glamour with cricket, Bollywood king Shah Rukh Khan Tuesday unveiled the name and logo of Kolkata’s Indian Premier League (IPL) team to be called ‘Kolkata Knight Riders’.

“Lot of efforts have gone into making this team, and now I am very happy to be a party to this wonderful team led by Sourav Ganguly,” Shah Rukh told reporters at a star-studded function here.

He said the effort was to focus on youth and go for a youth-oriented team.

The actor introduced the official team logo of ‘Knight Riders’ and presented its mascot ‘Hoog Lee’ - an animated image of a tiger.

“The colour combination of the team’s jersey, designed by Bollywood designer Manish Malhotra, would be black and gold,” he said.

“Black is the colour of goddess Kali and we aim for gold,” Shah Rukh said, adding that the kit for all the players would be sponsored by Reebok.

As the team’s theme song “Korbo, Lorbo, Jitbo” (We will do it, we will fight it, we will win it), composed by music director Vishal and Shekhar, blared, the superstar, the franchise owner of the team, raised his hands with team captain Ganguly, coach John Buchanan and actor Juhi Chawla.

“We have a lot of plans for cricket and entertainment as well during the tournament but those would be disclosed when they happen. We will try to bring lots of things on stage without distracting the game,” he said.

Four young Bengal cricketers - Lakshmi Ratan Shukla, Riddhiman Saha, Sourashis Lahiri and Rohan Banerjee - have also been included in the squad.

“I shall try to be here for all the Kolkata matches to cheer my team members,” Shah Rukh said.

Asked about the rate of tickets for the matches were to be held at the Eden Gardens, Shah Rukh said the matter would be finalised after discussion with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

“We will try to sort it out amicably. We are now working on the rates,” he said.
